(Bloomberg) -- A decision to close Europe’s biggest natural gas field is starting to raise concerns about the impact on the region’s biggest trading hub for the fuel. The Dutch Title Transfer Facility has grown into Europe’s largest gas market in the past few years, surpassing the U.K., partly because of the scale of flows converging in the Netherlands.A plan to shut down production at the Groningen field in the northeast corner of the Netherlands will make the nation dependent on imported gas. That’s prompting questions about how the trading hub will work in the future, according to Annie Krist, chief executive officer at GasTerra, a venture between Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Exxon Mobil Corp. and the Dutch state that handles flows from the field.“The Netherlands has a very liquid and attractive natural gas trading hub,”

Europe's two biggest suppliers of pipeline gas, Norway's Equinor and Russia's Gazprom, have lost market share for the first time in at least four years amid a tripling in liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports into the region over the past 10 months. LNG imports into Europe have jumped amid lower than expected spot demand from Asia, which has helped to send European gas prices to 10-year lows and filled European storages to multi-year highs. Data compiled by Refinitiv showing changes in the market share of gas from Norway, Russia and LNG sources is the latest example of how LNG is transforming Europe's gas market.

Two interconnected but separate developments are having a substantial impact on Europe’s energy imports. On the one hand, the shale revolution in the U.S. is producing massive amounts of natural gas, which is supercooled as LNG and shipped overseas. On the other hand, Europe's long-time supplier, Gazprom is working on additional pipeline infrastructure such as Nord Stream 2 and Turk Stream to secure its market share in the wake of increased competition.

12:47 Yahoo.com BusinessNew York Deals Critical Blow to $1 Billion Shale Gas Pipeline

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said Wednesday that the pipeline would result in water quality violations, including those caused by kicking up hazardous metals and disturbing seabed habitats. The decision comes as states tussle with the Trump administration over pipelines designed to carry abundant natural gas to the Northeast from shale basins in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. President Trump has taken action to speed up approval of interstate gas conduits, last month signing an executive order that aims to short-circuit state regulators who have held up projects by denying necessary permits amid environmental concerns.

21:10 WhatReallyHappened.com‘If transit of Russian gas through Ukraine stops, there will be no reverse’ – Putin

Ukraine still heavily relies on Russian gas, therefore it won’t be able to use reverse flows if the gas transit stops completely, Vladimir Putin said. As of now, the reverse gas flows “exist only on paper.”
There are no real reverse flows of gas in Ukraine, Putin said, adding that “if there’s no transit, there’re also no gas supplies.” He was apparently referring to reports that Ukraine continues to buy reverse supplies of Russian gas at a higher price from European nations.
The Russian president said that Ukraine is buying gas at twice the price it could have paid. Meanwhile, Kiev is “fooling around” instead of coming to terms with the conditions of gas transit decided by Moscow. Eventually, it is the Ukrainian taxpayer who suffers the most, Putin argued.
